Atelier

The studio is where every painting begins. It is both a place of work and a place of observation, where ideas gradually find their physical form through colour, gesture and material. Some paintings remain here for years, others eventually find a new home, each carrying the traces of the same ongoing exploration of nature, consciousness and the invisible field that connects them.

Painting begins long before the first brush touches the canvas. Much of the work takes place in observation, in silence and in allowing the next movement to reveal itself. The studio is where those moments slowly become visible.

In my work, I investigate unexpected truths about everyday life—and identify ways we can live from the transcendent to the concrete. In my art I only create from the transcendent, because something else is not possible.

About the artist

I have always been fascinated by what reveals itself when we look long enough.

As a child, I could disappear into the smallest things: the structure of a leaf, the movement of light, the enormous depth of the night sky, the strange certainty that the world contained infinitely more than what could be seen at first glance. That sense of wonder never left me. If anything, it became stronger.

I never wanted to lose that way of seeing. The older I became, the more precious it seemed to me: the ability to encounter something familiar as though seeing it for the first time…

Where the work begins

Nature has always been more than a subject to me.

I am drawn to the intelligence within it: the way everything emerges, transforms, disappears and returns in another form. A tree, a human being, a memory, a landscape, a distant star, each seems to exist within something larger, an invisible field of relationships that is continuously expressing itself through form.

This is where my work begins.

When I paint, I enter the canvas without knowing what it will become. There is no predetermined image to reproduce and no story waiting to be illustrated. I observe what appears and respond to it. I add, remove, wait, sometimes for quite a long time. A movement may suddenly suggest another movement, a colour can alter the direction of an entire painting. The work develops through this continuous exchange between attention, intuition and matter.

For me, painting is a way of approaching what exists before language. The canvas becomes a place where something sensed can acquire physical form without first having to be understood or explained.

I do not experience the cosmic and the everyday as separate worlds. The same underlying reality that fascinates me in physics and in the vastness of the universe is present in a tree, a human body, a memory, a bowl placed on a table. I am interested in that movement from the immeasurable to the intimate: the moment when what seems abstract or infinite becomes matter, experience and ordinary life.

Photography grew from that same way of seeing. Writing came through listening. Pottery brought another dimension: earth, touch, usefulness and the ancient human gesture of forming something with the hands. Each has its own language, yet they all originate in the same place.

I still recognise in myself the way I looked at the world as a child: the instinct to stop, to look closer, to become completely absorbed by something simply because it is there. I have never wanted to lose that capacity. Perhaps art has become my way of protecting it.

To look before naming.
To wonder before knowing.
To allow something to appear before deciding what it should become.

The world, to me, has never felt finished. Beneath what is familiar there is always another layer, another relationship, another possibility waiting to become visible.

And every time I enter the atelier, I can meet it again.

Biographical Note

Renata Hamsikova is a Czech-born artist based in the Netherlands whose practice encompasses painting, photography, writing and pottery. Her work explores the continuum between the invisible field from which form emerges and its physical manifestation in nature, matter and everyday life.

Growing up with a strong sense of wonder and an instinctive fascination with the natural world, she developed an enduring interest in what exists beyond immediate perception. This way of seeing continues to shape her practice, moving between the immense and the intimate, from the scale of the cosmos to landscapes, plants, memory and the familiar objects of daily life.

Hamsikova works intuitively, allowing paintings to develop without preliminary designs or predetermined outcomes. Photography, writing and pottery arise from the same underlying exploration, each offering a different way in which the unseen can acquire form.

Across these different media, her work moves between the cosmic and the intimate, approaching the quantum field, nature, consciousness and everyday life as different scales of a continuous reality. At its centre lies the moment at which the invisible becomes physical and what is sensed becomes tangible.

She lives and works in Hoorn, the Netherlands.
